Description
It was our second day on our sailing journey up to Mount Desert Island. While we were leaving Boothbay Harbor on our way up to Tenants Harbor, I looked toward the shore and saw something that I never expected. I asked my husband if harbor porpoises were really big. He said, oh yes honey. They are fairly large. At this point, the animal in question came up for air and I knew at once that it was not a harbor porpoise. It was a bonafide whale! We saw the baleen and its enormous head! The whale started swimming toward us and swam underneath our sailboat. My husband quickly said, "Get your camera Liz!" I ran beneath and thankfully the camera was set to the correct settings. So this is my best image of the whale's dorsal fin. He or she, swam parallel to us for a while and then disappeared as we made our way north. It was a thill of a lifetime to see a whale in Boothbay Harbor and something that I will never forget!
