Description
Just in front of Mackerel Cove on Bailey Island Maine, is Johnson's Field Preserve. It is open to anyone who wants to visit. While I was in the field, there was this lovely male monarch butterfly!! How do I know that it is a male? Well my friend, let me tell you!!
"The male monarch butterfly has a black spot on each hind wing that is made up of specialized scales. In other butterflies, similar spots emit pheromones to attract females, but scientists are not sure what function these spots serve for monarch males."
If you look very closely, the black spot can be seen in the lower portion of his right wing. I love these butterflies and to see one in the open and natural setting was thrilling!!! Happy Summer!
