Description
The Carriage Roads were built by John D. Rockefeller, Jr. between 1913 and 1940. He built these roads for horses and carriages so they too could enjoy the wonders of Acadia. The roads are sixteen feet wide and are well preserved by the National Park System and by Friends of Acadia. This particular Carriage Road is located on the Upper Hadlock Pond. There are three of the famous granite bridges on this loop, this one being the first on the way up the hill. We always enjoy this bike trip because at the top, we are greeted by a robust waterfall. This year however because of the drought, the waterfall barely had a trickle of water. The ground was very dry and the chance for fire was at an all time high. Acadia National Park is a very special place to me and my family and will always have a very special spot in my heart.
