Description
This is a view of Somes Sound from Sargent Mountain. We are facing the upper portion of Somes Sound which faces slightly north. The upper Somes Sound is a great place to moor or anchor your boat and Mount Desert Campground is also located in this very sheltered cove. Many people canoe and kayak in this area of the sound.
"Somes Sound is a fjard, a body of water running deep into Mount Desert Island, the main site of Acadia National Park in Maine, United States. Its deepest point is approximately 175 feet, and it is over 100 feet deep in several places. The sound almost splits the island in two."
What is the difference between a fjord and fjard? "Fjords are characterized by steep high relief cliffs carved by glacial activity and often have split or branching channels. Fjards are glacial depressions or valleys that have much lower reliefs than fjords."
When sailing in Somes Sound, we have seen many porpoises and seals! We also have seen Loons and many Grey Herons! It's so magical viewing this iconic body of water from Sargent Mountain. I couldn't wait to be back on the boat to see Sargent Mountain from Somes Sound!
