Description
The Draft Horse Pulling Competition is not really my favorite event at the Cumberland Fair in Cumberland Maine. I usually only watch at the beginning when they are pulling 4800 pounds. They are harnessed up to four concrete blocks each weighing 1200 pounds. All the horse teams seem to be able to handle pulling that much weight approximately 10 feet or less...I cannot be sure how far they pull it. After the preliminary pull, another 1200 pounds is added to the initial 4800 pounds! OMG!! So heavy. That is when I have to turn away. I am in no way insinuating that the farmers or the competition is harmful to these incredibly strong animals. It's what the breed was meant to do. These horses were bred to pull boulders out of fields so farmers could plant their crops. These animals are so beautiful and strong. I particularly love this pair. They were so happy to finally prove what they could do in the competition arena! I love their happy faces with their ears forward enjoying looking at the crowd cheering them on. Belgian horses are so sweet and gentle. I just love them and wouldn't mind having a team of my own...as long as they don't step on my feet! Ouch!
