Description
This summer of 2021, my husband and I sailed from Yarmouth, our hometown, to Mount Desert Island. It was the first time we had sailed nonstop and for a lengthy time up the coast of Maine. We had some idea of the route we wanted to take, but had several contingency plans depending on the wind, weather and our own stamina. On this particular day, we were sailing east from Rockland Maine, after spending the night there, through the Fox Thoroughfare, which separates North Haven and Vinalhaven, and moor for the night in Stonington on the magnificent island of Deer Isle. You can look this up on a map and see our route. When coming out of the Fox Thoroughfare, the fog was very dense, but we had a GPS to make our way to Stonington. It was our delight to see this lobster boat and a majestic schooner in between the islands far in the distance. I suppose I should have been more concerned with the approaching fog, but because we could easily see ten to fifteen nautical miles, we were not overly worried and actually felt very safe. The waters were calm and there was a gentle wind to guide us along. And actually, shortly after I took this photo, the fog retreated quite a bit and we found our way to Stonington quite easily. Sailing up the Maine coast was an epic adventure and gives me a great appreciation for the folks who make their livelihood on the water such as this lonesome lobsterman to the left. They go out in all types of weather to bring us our lobster and fish. Slainte to them and to the crew aboard the schooner way in the distance! This photo was taken on July 14, 2021 just off the coast of Vinalhaven Maine.
