Description
The Poppy is one of the most beautiful flowers, and also the most deadly. For years people have used the poppy as a sleep aid. The color is a bright vibrant red which makes it very attractive to people. I named this photograph Conundrum because for all the Poppy's beauty, it is very deadly.
I was curious of the symbolism of the poppy. This is what I found.

"Symbolism of the Poppy Flower"
"The Poppy is one of the most widely used symbolic flower around the world. Ancient Greek, Egyptian, and Roman societies linked it with sleep due the sedative effect of the plant’s sap. The Greeks in particular tied it to sleep because of Morpheus, the God of sleep. The Victorians gave the flower a variety of meanings based on the color, including consolation for loss, deep sleep, and extravagance. Chinese and Japanese flower experts recommend the Poppy for couples because it means a deep and passionate love between two people, but white Poppies are tied to death in those cultures too. Other colors represent success and beauty in Eastern cultures. The red Poppy is the traditional flower of remembrance for Europe and North America because of its ties to World War I and II. Some people simply think it is a cheery sign of summer because of its size and intense colors."
"Poppy Flower Color Meanings"
"The color meaning of a Poppy varies greatly. Some common connections include:"
"Red – Linked to death, remembrance, and consolation in the West. Symbolizes success and love in the East."
"White – Used for funerals and memorials in the East, sleep and peaceful rest in the West."
"Purple, Pink, Blue – Tied to imagination, luxury, and success."
So this Poppy at the United States Botanic Garden represents Death. It's so pretty and I find it very difficult to imagine it representing death. I will always remember the scene in The Wizard of Oz when the Wicked Witch of the West makes Poppies magically appear in the field just before Dorothy, The Scarecrow, the Lion and the Tin Man are about to enter the Emerald City. Dorothy and the lion quickly fall asleep because of the strong powerful sleep agent in the Poppies. But Glinda saves the day by having snow fall on the friends and all is right again. The Poppy in the movie represents death and evil, but the snow comes and covers the ground with purity and love. It's amazing to me how much I learn from one photograph and how much symbolism there is in everyday occurrences.
