Description
Sometimes I step out of my generally happy mood and create a piece of art that is dark, gloomy, eerie and mysterious. This window was just begging to be black and white! In the original photo, the clapboards are red and the window frame is a pale white. When coming out of the most colorful and splendid Flower Show in Portland Maine, I was drawn to this window. It's broken, the edges are rough. The window itself is very old. I love that it still has the weights in the center with the rope. Those windows are called Sash Windows. It seems the Sash Window originates from Holland in the 17th century and brought to the UK where they became widely known as the 'Yorkshire' sash. There were many articles written about the Sash Window in the 1500's. Here is one: However, W. Horman, in his Vulgaria , printed in 1519, writes: 'Glasen wyndowis let in the lyght . . . I have many prety wyndowes shette with levys goynge up and down.' Needless to say, this window is not in England, but in Portland Maine, so it's fair to say that they found their way across the pond to the colonies and were put to use. I wonder what the age is of old this window and the age of the building that surrounds it. When I find out, I will add to this description and let you know!
