Description
The Richard Hunnewell House, Scarborough Maine is Scarborough's oldest known building. It was once the home to Richard Hunnewell, but in 1647, the Massachusetts Bay Colony Court passed a law requiring settlements in the colony to support a school if their numbers of settlers was one hundred or more. The town raised enough money and asked Mr. Hunnewell if his home could be used as the school house. After the building was finished being a school, it was then utilized as a home one again. This building is now owned and oporated by the town of Scarborough Maine and the Scarborough Garden Club maintains the gardens and flowers, As a child, I would look forward to seeing the building each time my parents would take me to the Scarborough Beach. I still delight in its history and its preservation.
