Description
Culloden Moor is the location of the final battle between The Highlander Jacobite Army and the British Army. The Highlanders were attempting to place Prince Charles Stuart on the British Throne. The Jacobites were slaughtered by the British and the Highlander's way of life was gone forever. It is a sad, sad historical memory. For many Scots in Scotland and around the world, the Battle at Culloden Moor is still very much alive for them. This is visible when you visit Culloden Moor. There are many flowers scattered all over the Moor, such as this Madonna Lily. This beautiful lily is symbolic and is the flower most commonly associated with funeral services as they symbolize the innocence that has been restored to the soul of the departed. The white lily expresses majesty and purity, where as white stargazer lilies specifically symbolize sympathy. The Madonna Lily is a symbol of the Virgin Mary for many Christian religions, such as Roman Catholics and Episcopalians. Lilies symbolize that the soul of the departed has received restored innocence after death. All their sins have been forgiven and they will be absolved of all wrong. The living are leaving their flowers for the fallen Scottish Highlanders who perished on Culloden Moor. This battle is engraved into the hearts and souls of the Scottish Citizens. They leave flowers here 274 years after the battle. The battle took place on 16 April 1746 and is as real and emotional today as it was then. The feeling on this bloody battlefield is indescribable. I felt the sadness and could imaging the carnage. It was an experience that I will never forget.
