Description
A long time ago, I planted lupine seeds in dedication of my most beloved children's book, Miss Rumphius by Barbara Cooney. I started the seeds inside and planted the seedlings in my front garden. It took about one year for the lupines to burst through and produce these magnificent flowers. They are the first flowers to bloom in my garden and as the summer progresses, I have daisies and phlox arrive soon after! These plants do proliferate in my garden and where there was only one plant, I now have three or four! I must think about transplanting some of them so they will spread somewhere else! A word of caution...do not pick these flowers. They do not smell as good as they look!
Miss Rumphius was first published by first published by Viking Books in 1982. It features the life story of fictional Miss Alice Rumphius,Miss Rumphius wanted to travel all over the world to see amazing things. Her grandfather, who she lived with and helped paint the skies in his paintings, said that was all well and fine, but she also had to do something to make the world more beautiful. It wasn't until Miss Rumphius was older that she decided to plant Lupines in her tiny Maine village. That is how Miss Alice Rumphius made the world more beautiful. She followed through with her promise to her grandfather. The seeds and flowers spread all over town and soon the New England Maine village was peppered with beautiful purple, pink and blue colored Lupine.
As a mother, teacher and now a photographer, I strive to make the world more beautiful too! I have many flowers growing all over my home and it seems that I add more and more each year! I challenge you to make the world more beautiful just as Miss Alice Rumphius.
