Description
Frenchboro is a town on Long Island in Hancock County. It is just off the coast from Mount Desert Island and Swan's Island. There are many ways to visit Frenchboro. There is a ferry from Bass Harbor and many mail boats who make the journey out to the island. We were on the Bass Harbor Cruise with Captain Eli. It is a wonderful cruise on a smallish boat that will take you around the waters of Bass Harbor and some of the neighboring islands. We stopped in Frenchboro entering from Lunt Harbor. We walked around the town after eating a the Lunt's Dockside Deli. There are many hiking trails that I would have enjoyed meandering around, but there just wasn't enough time. I love the Church Steeple!! There is a Cod Wind Directional on the very top. Frenchboro and it's home, Long Island, are known for their cod fishing. The town was built as a village for fishermen. I wish that I knew more about its history to explain to you, but there is a book published by Island Port Press that tells the history of Frenchboro and the Long Island residence. I look forward to ordering it and learning more about the incredibly ingenuitive people who love and call this wonderful Maine town home.
