The Cumberland Fair Grounds in Cumberland Maine has a fantastic horse racing track. These horses are known as Standardbred horses and they are descended from the English thoroughbred Messenger. More than 90 percent of modern Standardbreds trace their lineage back to Messenger's great-grandson Hambletonian, one of the fastest trotters of the mid-19th century and a prolific sire. Pacers are a lot faster than their counterparts Trotters. Pacers move their legs on the same side at the same time, rather than trotters who move them diagonally. For example, the right legs move forward at the same time and then the left legs move together at the same time. These horses racing at the Cumberland Fair were moving each side at the same time. It is a very fast and speedy race. As you can see in the photograph, lots of sand and debris are churned up creating a cloud of dust in the horse's wake. It was thrilling to watch and even better to capture on film!
