Description
The Royal River, named after William Royal, is located in Yarmouth Maine. Yarmouth Maine, at the time that William Royal moved here, was originally called North Yarmouth and encompassed the modern day towns of The original 1680 plantation of North Yarmouth encompassed present-day North Yarmouth, Cumberland, Yarmouth, Chebeague Island, Pownal, Freeport, Harpswell, and the Mere Point portion of Brunswick. There were many homes and businesses built along the Royal River. Now a days, we walk our dogs and enjoy the many animals and birds that make the Royal River their home. Further down the river from these falls, there are many boat yards which leads out to Casco Bay just adjacent to Cousin's Island.
They say that each photograph you take tells a story about who you are and the stories you read that come to your photograph. I am a sixth generation Yarmouth resident. My maternal ancestors settled my home in Yarmouth in circa 1855. They were Irish immigrants and several of them worked in the mill that was once located on this glorious river. My paternal ancestor is William Royal whom this river is named for. It's amazing to me that I could come from two very different families and still live in the same place that they called home for such a long time. The Royal River has given a lot of itself to this thriving New England town and to my ancestral history as well.
