Description
Bass Harbor is my favorite lighthouse. I think I have visited this iconic lighthouse more than one hundred times. It never gets old and I always visit this place when I am on Mount Desert Island. I love how it sits on the rocky cliffs, looking down and out at the ocean protecting the boats from crashing up on the rocks. This iconic lighthouse is not to be missed when you are visiting Mount Desert Island. Seeing it ocean side is even more magnificent!! We went out on the Bass Harbor Cruise with Captain Eli! He starts his tour in Bass Harbor and takes us out to Frenchboro Maine on Long Island. He starts the tour at Bass Harbor Lighthouse, which in my humble opinion, is the best place to start the tour. I love this lighthouse and I particularly love it from the ocean side. You can see why there is a lighthouse at this location. The rocky shoreline is a boaters worst nightmare. The fog is sometimes very dense and the rocky shore would not be visible in the slightest. The loud fog horn and iridescent red light saved and will continue to save many ships and boats during inclement weather.
